Dads civic needs a new transmission and the easiest way is through the engine bay. It weighs almost 80 pounds, and leaning over the bay and lifting it out probably isn't going to happen. I dont mind 'renting' it, not looking to spend a lot but I know its not going to be free. Im going to be doing it sunday or monday, so any time before then.
Thanks in advance

I can ask my dad where to get one. He got one for when he removed the engine in Lewis' S-10

Harbor Freight or something like that should rent them out pretty cheap.
IDK if Auto Zone(?) would rent something like that, but I do know they rent out spring compressors for FREE!

yea I know they have spring compressors and stuff but I checked online and they didn't say they rented out a hoist. I'm not sure if harborfreight rents them out either.
I should have just asked you first alex lol. that'd be great, otherwise we'll throw out our backs and have back problems by 20

You can drop a Civic transmission out the bottom of the car. It's actually one of the easiest cars to do this on. You are going to make more work for yourself with an engine hoist. JacK the car up and drop it out the bottom. Trust me it is easier this way.

I asked him about going through the bottom and he said that all the suspension and other stuff is in the way. I guess I'm helping him out when it does this and we're just going to use straps with hooks and support it from underneath with a jack. So between the two of us it should go ok.

Not sure what year or if we're talkign A/T or M/T, it should generally go like this...
1) Remove axles.
2) Remove shifter linkage.
3) Support motor with jack.
4) Unbolt motor mount.
5) Drop transmission.
6) Reinstall in reverse order.
The transmission actually clears the front subframe without too much hassle. We used a transmission jack and just dropped right out. The only problem that we had was with the axles.
This would give you an idea...

I think the age has a significant role in that. Its not like hes 30, and has an M Roadster while dad has a civic, hes under 20.
Not bustin on ya for being under 20 and having a nice car though, just curious how you lucked out and got an M Roadster.

I saved my money since I was a little kid, every birthday, christmas etc. and had a job since I was 16. I still did stuff, but I didn't go blow my money every chance I got. My dad helped me cover a couple grand. There was a cheaper one in florida, but he said we weren't ready to get it yet, so when we were, the closest one was in new york, and it was more expensive, so he kind of screwed me on the cheaper on and I guess thats why he covered the difference. This is the car (Mz3, either coupe or roadster) that I've wanted since I first saw it years ago, even though I had no idea what it was at the time.
My M was a 2000, I got it on my 18th birthday, and it had exactly 42000 miles when the guy pulled up. My dad drives a civic every day because my mom never wanted us to live close to my dads work (they're split now, so he lives closer) and it was a really long drive there and back. Now our house is on the market for over a year, he has to pay 2 mortages, 2 water bills, etc. Hes thinking of getting another car as a weekend/whatever car but I really dont know if he can afford it right now.
I love the car, its paid off and everything, its just now that everything else is falling apart, I have no money because of the car. My parents split so as soon as our house sells me and my girlfriend have to move out. I've contemplated selling it, but I love it too much, then again I rather not be homeless and have a shitty car

also, I posted on civicforums around the same time as I made this thread. They said the subframe would have to be dropped and the motor lowered to get it out from the bottom. Me and silver are just going to beast it out through the top, I got a chance yesterday to look at the car so theres definately room

I've had a Porsche since I was 16, so I understand where you are coming from. However, I am saying that its not normal for someone so young to have such a nice car.

Wow dude, I am very, very impressed. Thats alot of self control to save up that much money, especially from such a young age. I hope I didnt come across as rude, I was just more curious than anything, its the parents that buy their kids the type of cars that we all drive.
Also, mad props on having it paid off. Everything I own is paid off, which is nice. But one of my friends is $13,000 upside down on his 330.:banghead:
Sucks about the house, but I just went through the same exact thing. Parents got divored, dad sold the house. I had to move in with my brother and his wife for the summer. Luckily we sold the house for exactly what we were asking for in a week. I was really surprised.

Thanks. I mean I saved up 90% of my money, and as soon as I got a job the money came pretty quick. My dad always taught me to save, and the rest of my family always stressed it.
It sucks though as soon as I got the car pretty much I got a girlfriend, and not getting into too much detail she ended up living with us so I had to pay for pretty much everything. I also bought a jeep for her so she can get a job and stuff (it was $1200 through a loan from publix, and I'm still paying for that) but thats 2 cars of gas and maintenance, an extra mouth to feed, etc. Sad thing is she makes more money cleaning houses and stuff than I make at publix these days.
My dad paid off the difference that I couldn't pay, and I started pay him off once a month and for birthdays and xmas' he would knock it down a bit.
Must be nice about the house, we've come down like $50K from where we started, and people still aren't interested, its been over a year now I think. and we have people that want to see the house like every other day
Silver knows you I think but I'd like to start getting out to the UCF meets or whatever if thats still going on, I dont think I've ever seen your car up close.

I still go up to the UCF meets pretty religously. Mostly because I have a good group of friends that are always up there. The meets have been decent, some better than others, some where there are just a few of us BSing. We are going to try to get the group going next year though. I'm actually gonna be VP of the club, so hopefully we will be able to get some more people to come out.
Most of the time I have the Honda though, its waay more reliable, plus, I just paid a ton of money for it, so I like to drive it more often. If you ever go up, shoot me a PM before you do and I will go pick up the 944 so you can take a look at it. I actually owe someone a drive in it, so I need to pick it up eventually.
By the way, if you want to come over and do the shocks on the Honda this week that would be aweome  OTOH, I would much rather be putting the Tokikos on the car than pulling the tranny. Honda certified used warrenty FTMFW!

They've had me working the past few wednesdays, but I might head out next week as I have it off, I'll let you know.
I still can't believe honda wanted $1100 for a USED tranny with 60K on it, then another grand to put it in. I found a rebuilt one for $875 shipped, and I'm doing it for half the labor cost, plus putting in new axles and a oil pan gasket

I try to go once a month. I either go to the Palm Bay BCC events, or the events up at the new po-po training facility in Geneva. I've only been to one Geneva event, but it was pretty awesome. I'm an SCCA member, so I generally do the SCCA events.

ended up going through the bottom. we had to do the oil pan as well so taking that off gave enough clearance to go through the bottom without dropping the subframe.
