At the request of The Almighty JC! Maybe I'll update this thread later with some better pics.. but this should whet the appetite for roadster/turbo porn.

Edit: Forgot these 2 pics of the previous car.

Couldn't leave well enough alone... On to MO POWWA!

The Car as it was in May of 2005, w/ 6,900 miles on the clock and no mods (Not even stone guards!) :

July of 2005, My Birthday, I had a nice little brake seizure, the aftermath :

While the car was on 4 jackstands, broke to Hell, I did a "free mod" :

Couple months later, the car was back on the road, better than new with a buncha rear end mods. Then came the big dog :

Whatcha mean about the brake? The "Free Mod" you mean? Painted it high-temp ceramic aluminum color and painted the ///M in correct colors.

Or did you mean the rotor that looked like ) that? ;) In that case, right rear brake seized up from having 8 year old fluid in it and sent me spinning into a curb at about 40mph. When I changed the fluid, it looked and felt like molasses. Was very nasty. Should have changed it sooner, but honestly didn't think of it. My bad :(

Oh no, if I told the whole tale, you'd probably have to wash my mouth out w/ soap. Because a lot of it was not fun. Especially the rebuilt rearend. Took about 4 months, brand new trailing arm, and brand new rear subframe, not to mention all the upgrades I did.

And I have 5 toes, I assure you, I was a little upset and my toes likely curled a bit.

Shazaam!

And yes, the Z's interior was nice.. only problem was that the damn thing had been parked outside for it's whole life (until I got it) and the red leather on the dash was peeling back from the black plastic. Made me very sad every time I looked at it.

Would have been about $3k to fix. :puke:

Sure thing mate... What setup you running? I assume custom, just curious what hardware? I didn't have the time to put together my own kit, so I just went w/ Nick's for ease of not having to fight w/ custom fitting and whatnot. Can't have my daily driver out of service for several months anymore, since I only have the M now.

Probably why I went out and purchased a bare motor....

New tires today! No pics, but they're huge. 275/40 in the Rear, 235/40 in the Front.

Traction is so much easier to control - I dunno if it's the fact that they're new (my old ones were completely bald), or because they're so much more ginormous.

Fat rubber is sexy.

now jake you need some lower comp pistons, gt35r turbo, and slap a supercharger on it (no turbo lag FTW)!!!

Negative on the wtfevercharging they call that stuff (I forget).

How about this for an appetite whetting...

CP Custom 9.0:1 Pistons
Possibly Stock Rods - No reason to downgrade to Arrow, and Verdi are too f'ing expensive for a daily driver
Stock size multi-layer HG
ARP *EVERY* Nut/Bolt in the motor
Either a knife-edged crank or a custom billet 3.4L stroker
GT35R (even at 9.0 comp our cars can spin this to ~24psi before 3.5k rpm)
Moderately P&P Head
Titanium Valves, Dual Valve Springs, all associated hardware
Custom built camshafts

Of course, I own none of these things yet, but they are on the list. I have yet to decide on a few of them. The stroker crank, for instance, while providing a small bump in displacement, may actually harm my high rpm power a bit. W/ the GT35R and 9.0 comp, my low end will barely be touched, so 3.4L may not really be needed.

Maybe next year I'll start building it up :) Not in any hurry, really. 350whp is more than enough for a daily driver - That setup would likely put it in the weekend only category, which isn't my favorite place to be. I bought the car to drive it, so that makes me shy away a bit.

Edit: And all these things really aren't that expensive in the scope of things... Expensive for car modding, but not for BMW modding.. as long as you actually call the companies and have them build the custom stuff for you w/o saying "BMW" in your conversation.

yeah thats great, but the gt35r has too much lag and is uneconomical for autoX and street driving....which is what you do.... "twincharging" (lol) has a supercharger to power you out of the low RPMs and get to the turbo's power band. Its great to do with a big turbo

I think you'd actually be surprised by the GT35R on the S52 motor...

The T60-1 I'm running right now actually has MORE lag (not much, mind you) than a GT35R spinning at a higher psi.

http://mydrive.roadfly.com/blog/uploads/rukman_TTS3_20psi.jpg

That's Rukman's setup running a GT35R at 8.5:1 Compression. The bottom graph is actually boost pressure, so you'll notice full boost (18psi) at about 3500 rpm.

And this link (http://www.icsperformance.com/Cust%20JA%20E36%20M3%2035r%20v%20t61.htm) shows the GT35R compared to a T61 which is showing max power only about 300rpm slower than mine, but then again max power on that graph is 557wtq.

Edit: You may be thinking about the 1.06 A/R...? In which case, yes, the spool SUCKS. Plenty of people have made 650-750whp on the 0.82 A/R w/ the above spool :) No need for the 1.06.

still...... twin charging FTW

I'd do it on a lower displacement motor. Mini, WRX, etc... Those cars can make good use of twin charging. It would be a waste of money for me, though. Freight training it from 240wtq at 2500rpm to 550wtq at 3900rpm is plenty enough for me.

oh yeah i know its alot of money when it doesnt help *that* much.... on a dyno....

believe me though, you'll really feel it at the autoX though. You want as quick a spool up and low a lag time as possible because you are on and off the power so rapidly...

Hehe you'll have to ride w/ me sometime. Compared to the 4-cyl turbos and the Supra I've been in, this thing has zero discernible lag.

The car pulls like stock to 2500, then the turbo starts to reel it in and just keeps it pulling at the same rate as the previous 2500rpm.

Drive my girl's A4 all the time, and that thing has monstrous turbo lag. I couldn't believe the amount of lag it has for a stock turbo - AMAZES me they would engineer it that way. Feels like a damn Geo Metro until about 3200, then it starts to rocket away (FINALLY).
