well basically thats how i read it in the eurotuner i bought. vw doesnt sell hardly any golfs because americans associate the name with the boring game when its actually german for gulf (gulf wind). so they sell more gti's than they do the base model golf and since they are the peoples car they changing the name and the setup a bit to be a more appealing entry level car. i think its a great move personally

I guess. I like GTI better than Golf, regardless of engine, I think the same thing when I hear "Golf"

well thats the problem they have. the golf is just the entry level car. boring, bland, cheap. the gti is the sporty version of the golf. now it will go back ot what it was in the 70's and 80's as the rabbit and rabbit GTI

Weird how marketing plays such a huge role in peoples ability to make decisions...

OK... this is what happens when BMW guys try to figure out VW stuff... :p
Originally the VW hatchback in the US was called the Rabbit (another animal named vehicle was the Fox). in the late 70s, early 80s.
The Golf name took over in the 80s.
Golf sales have sucked. With a new model year, their new marketing people (who have been kicking ass and winning awards for their viral campaign) suggested they bring the old name back.
The new Rabbit is a step back towards what the Rabbit used to be, which was a great little car... the Golf for the last 3 generations has been rather disappointing... back to basics so to speak.
My GTI is technically a Rabbit GTI, though with the new designations, they've also done away with calling it anything but a GTI... its a stand-alone model now.
The Rabbit comes with a 5-cylinder engine, and is available with 2 or 4 doors, 5-speed manual or some wimpy automatic. What do you expect for a car that starts at under 15k?
Its an amazing piece of machinery for that price, WAY more stuff comes standard than the comparable Honda or Toyota... and its pretty sharp. Key differences between the Rabbit and GTI are the headlamps, trim, suspension, engine, and transmission... from behind, they're identical... I'm thinking of putting a rabbit badge with a 2.0 tag next to it on there for ****s and giggles... (standard Rabbit badge is the Rabbit and 2.5.)
The 2.5 is a decent engine, but not many mods are available for it. Anything suspension wise can be swapped from a GTI, same for trim, bodykits, etc...

... The new R32 might be arriving this fall... which will have AWD... the reviews of it thus far have been less than stellar...

Its only got 250 hp from a naturally aspirated 3.2l VR6...
its heavy. expensive. and even more expensive to get power out of (turbo systems for the VR are pretty much 7 grand at a minimum, not including an intercooler... this engine can yield some SERIOUS power (500hp) with a twin turbo setup... but at extreme costs.
The 2.0T FSI in the GTI is a much less expensive powerplant to get serious power out of... 300 hp is within reach without upgrading the turbo... you WON'T get anywhere near that on the VR without FI or major rebuild (cams).
Plus, the VR weighs more, and the AWD system isn't light either...
and its got lame chrome trim everywhere... but thats a personal preference thing.
I haven't driven one (or seen one in person yet), but the reviews have been pretty consistent... nice car... but not all its cracked up to be.

my brother was supposed to get a couple of those fsi's and build one sick motor out of the 3. something fell thorugh though which sucks cause he would have been the first to realllly do stuff with that motor. i still love the vr6 though

Is the rabbit essentially the same as an A3 but the A3 has awd?
sublimefan86

they are somewhat similar, the a3 being on the luxury end. plus you have the option of the sport package on the audi w/ a v6..

The A3 is available with Quattro, but only if you get the V6... which I think pretty much forces you to get the S-Line version... which is pushing the mid 30s price tag...
the S3 might be coming over... which will have the 2.0t FSI with a bigger turbo, AWD, and... the killer... TWO DOORS! :)
The S3 has been around in Europe for a while, its a pretty rad ride.

somebody from tampa had 3 messed up 2.0t fsi motors from the mk5's and he was going to buy all 3 for a good price and build a sick motor and i think put it his other old rabbit he has. deal fell through for some reason. he would have been the first to do something like that with the new engine.
