First let me say that I will be running custom boxes for my subs. I have narrowed it down to three sets of subs.
1.) two 10" kicker comp. vr's with a 500w bazooka amplifier. (They will be underpowered but that amp is free to me)
2.) Two 12" kicker comps. with a 2 channel kicker amp and a box, which will be sold off.
3.) Two 12" MTX jack hammers with the 500w bazooka amplifier.
What do you guys think I should do?

depends on what kind of music you listen to. 12s will pound a little harder then 10s in 90% of applications but 10s will be tighter and more accurately reproduce sound. both mtx and kicker to me i think banging loud bass not clarity personally i would look into some different brands.
i've had comp (3) vr10s and (2) 12s before, both failed with powered by a jl 500/1
i have heard good things about the new jackhammers so i'd lean towards those out of the 3
since you said custom boxes i'm not even taking into account the loss of room in the trunk
or don't loose much trunk space and do something like this

jriggs: What other brands would you suggest that have good SQ and are still in the price range of the Kickers or MTX.
Maximus: I do not have the money at the time but I will son. Dont consider me a top priority but I will PM you when I can afford.

i'm guessing your in the 500 total package range, if your looking for max boom with sound quality look into doing just one 12 and spend the same amount of money.
i'm a fan of JL Audio (w6 and w7s) and Rainbow audio (haven't heard one i didn't like)
for amps i like alpine, jl audio, and rainbow

i say #2, kickers are good subs. i have a friend back home who had one 12 kicker comp sub (squared one) in his honda ek, it was bumping nice. im thinking about settling for a 10, i would like to have trunk sapce lol

well I am gonna have seperate boxes built to hold one sub behind each taillight. And crust would you be willing to just sell the alpine type r's without the box?

the square ones are solo barics even though they are not the best with sound quality i do kinda like them and they pound really dang hard.
as for trunk space with a little ingenuity you can fit 2 12s in the trunk with plenty of room as in the picture i posted above. figure out what you want the system to sound like, price range then how masterfully your going to make your install and you can keep most of your trunk space

Yea these are the old school 12w6's but that setup was hitting around 147spl in a jeep cherokee. I'll take $500.00 The amp alone sells for $1100.00 new

Yea i will sell them without the box for $200. I could also help you out building a custom enclosure. Like fiberglass walls on each side of the trunk so you still have a little trunk space, which is what i think you are looking for. Here is one i did kinda what im talking about.

You might consider the W7s... I heard a setup today with a single ten inch... I think my heart stopped. The cone literally moved like 7 or 8 inches on some lower frequency notes. And it sounded real nice too, when it wasn't giving me a heart attack.

I think JL's have excellent sound quality. I've owned several. I have the old school w3 12's. I just blew them cause i'm pushing way to much power to them. 1,800 watts, 850 rms. Made my headlights blink hardcore until i got a capacitor.
