Tonight I was driving the car pretty hard against a porshce and when I was shifting from third to fourth the gearbox like blocked me out and spit it out and I pinged the rev limiter....soon after the car started running rough and barley idling and was making a sound like ..........klack klack klack.......I think I bent a valve but I'm not sure any opinions???
The car shudders and runs really rough anf also my check engine light came on!

It runs like **** though......like HORRIBLE! It kicked me out shifting into 4th from the top of third! So it pinged pretty qiick.

im sure somebody on here will have a good guess, if not try bimmerforums cause that site has tons of members and info so theyll definately know whats up. you probably released the clutch a tad before you were fully in the 4th gear but still hit the throttle and overrevved it. ive had similar occurances with it feeling like the gate is blocked off but usually its third for me

The engine knocks really bad....like outside the car when its running you can hear it really loud by the left front fender and a tinking sound by the right front if you kneal down....??

not very likely but since im not actually hearing it , its a slim possibility... check your oil level... its probably not as simple as that but gotta start simple
M3Stoner
07-07-2006, 08:46 PM
the oil level is right at the second notch on the cone looking part of the stick.

damn i was hoping for your sake it was low oil level and a loud lifter tick or something

lol first thing i would do... is stop running the car! lol dont worry about the noise anymore, but call a dealer now (well not at 10:45 at night lol but in the morning). Not reeves, but some other dealer and take it in for a diagnostics check. If it keeps knocking it can turn into a much worse problem

Sucks about the car. I thought you were gunna be riding up with us to O-town. Oh well, hopefully the engine isn't too f*cked up.
I've heard about E36s having bad tranny mounts and it causing drivers to mis-shift...maybe it was 2nd gear you were going into :dunno:

Pinging off the rev limiter for a sec should'nt cause any problems, but it does sound like you over-revved the engine. Just from your description, it sounds like you might've bent a valve, or caused some kind of damage in the valve train. However, since the engine still essentially runs, it stands to reason that the pistons aren't hitting the valves, so hopefully the damage isn't too bad. Oh, and also, when you have the place check it out, make sure they do a leakdown/compression test. Low compression in a cylinder could mean a bent valve.

Just got it checked out really quick today. Number 4 and 5 are misfiring! They said either plugs or coils, and I checked with paul and I have a diff code than he did when he bent the valves. Also the roughness just could be from the two not firing and just being dead weight in there. I'm gunna change the plugs tonight and move some coils around and see whats what....Also it didnt really redline that bad and didnt sound like I went into second I just think I pinged it bad with my foot on the gas after a bad shift. We shall see, either way I have an appointment with Mastro on monday to have it looked at. Thanks though guys for all your help!

If you bend valves you will not throw a code unless something was interrupted while mis-shifting which it seems might have happened , the key is usually seeing the oil light come on and car shuts off.
Check the compression for ****z and gigglez

30 days doesnt really apply if you bend valves ......thats like running the car in a wall and bringing it back. It's called abuse.

Oh yeah and if one of your plugs looks a little smashed thats not gonna be a good sign

Well I changed out the plugs and all of them looked fine but thats not the prob. Still is misfiring and another thing....right after I turn the car off there is this slight....pshht, like 3-4 sec after I turn it off.

Good news!!!! The engine is fine!! Just regular BMW tick sound I found out after playing with it. THe klunk noise is the clutch so the dousche bags fu*ked up the clutch.....I HATE SUBE DEALERSHIP!! haha And the reason the engine was misfiring is the idiots filled it with 87 freakin octane!! It still had a quarter tank of 93 in it, hence why it ran ok for the first 4 hrs I had it...A$$HOLES Well I'm just gunna buy an upgraded clutch now and do it myself so it's all good, I have the money left over from the IS but I just wanted to tell yall thank you very much for all the imput and that everything is good now!!

I know dude I'm fu*kin PISSED!!!!!!!!
The oil starvation tick is normal after hard driving...Glad to hear you didn't damage anything.
May I suggest, when replacing the clutch that you also replace the tranny mounts as this will also help from mis-shifting/being thrown from gear.

No it wasn't an oil tick, the wrong gas (87 octane) will detonate (ping) on a M3 which requires I believe atleast 91?
No my car requires 93 octane or higher....at ALL TIMES.......:flip: You drive an M3...you can't go cheap on the fuel.

M3Stoner
07-11-2006, 03:24 PM
Yea Cali the highest is 91oct....Right now im still trying to rid my car of all the crap, i just filled up the tank but there is still some stuff in there so it will drive awesome then drive like crap, but I'm deff going to replace the throwout bearing and look a tthe flywheel bc I'm almost positive thats whats making the klunk klunk sound.
