My girlfriend is interested in a mk4/mk5 jetta and I need some opinions to help her out. I know nothing beyond a Golf TDI will beast your MPG. Soooo...

What is the all around best Jetta?

Looks are on top of the list so the older mk3 and below are out of the question for her. Im pushing a TDI on her but she loves the red grille line of a GTI. Im more concerned with reliability and features. What does FG think?

my girl has a 2006 MKV jetta 2.5 and she loves it, we put an ABD Cold air on it and its pretty bad ass. The gas is kind of up and down id bet around 22-28mpg. Peronsally MK4's have way to many problem and as phoenix said the 1.8's can be poor reliability wise. She has almost 30k on the clock and shes had no major problems yet. Good luck!

the new mk5 jetta and rabbit ('08) have 170 hp and lb/ft which is comparable to the 1.8t, but would probably be much more reliable (but less tuning options). The new 08 jetta wolfsburg however, has the 2.0t engine which is a tuning beast and very reliable, but is well priced.

Haha if it was me this thread would be different. Its all about the look for girls. Not too many girls want < mk4. Im telling her to go for a TDI. That way she can throw a hitch on that bitch and haul my boat. haha

what motor, besides the old jeep/amc 4 litre inline 6 doesnt have 9 million prollems that techs talk about? a buddy of mine practically drove his 18t into the ground and had no prollems with the motor except the starter solenoid, once. he was pushing 16lbs. there are always tons of issues we never hear about, unless ur friends are techs. that being said, power to u calera haha

The guy asked how people felt about the MK4 & MK5, please don't run your mouth to me behind your keyboard.
And if you had any idea about cars at all (besides reading the internet) you would know what I'm talking about. I have two good friends of mine that have gone through Volkswagen's Training in Chicago, and the only thing they talk about is how many problems both of these motors have, or what recalls they come in with.

dude one it was joke, I was saying best jetta was an oxymoron... my best friend drives a mk2 clean as fuck jetta, i thought it was funny if you didnt..... i could give two shits..... but you are right I am "running my mouth behind a keyboard" and "I have no idea about cars" ... well for one my comment was not directed toward you or anyone for that matter and two fuck the keyboard I am that guy, so if you still have an imaginary problem with it I am at most meets per request although I frequent the Tuesday and Saturday's if you would like to make it convienient for me.

Yes their Techs, why else would I say that they went to Chicago. Not saying that every 1.8t, or 2.0t is shit, their give or take. Both of these motors are in the shop a hell of alot more than the VR6 cars...I'm done speaking on this, since I'm being attacked by knuckleheads.
Calera/// sorry that your thread ended up this way, you were asking for opinions, and how we felt on the cars you were asking about. This is why I usually, or never respond to these type of threads.
sorry we ruined ur whole day by having a discussion presenting multiple sides of an issue

Neither of you ruined my day....And Sean I thought you were coming at me...Never looked at it the way you did. And for a better note..I'm not stupid to come out to a meet to start shit.

indeed, as far as I was concerned I always sort of looked to you as the "VW GUY" of the website. I found it strange to see you respond that, I am sorry as well I have had a horrible day followed by 2 liters of white russians and many beers.......sooo my fuse short.

I was wondering what the hell they were quoting
haha

But to be honest, I will never even think about buying another 1.8T...a VR6 on the other hand. But overall I just dont think it would be a VW. Thats just me, I know a lot of people with great success with 1.8T's, then theres my side, with horrible experiences with them

It's just experience and maybe a longer warranty program would entice me back into a VW

But I haven't heard anything bad about the 2.5's and haven't heard a single thing bad with the 2.0T GTi

I just wiki'd the motors and the V6 is one of two motors?

[wikipedia.org]

2.0 litre, I4, 147 kW (197 hp) turbocharged gasoline engine, 6-speed manual / 6-speed manual DSG
3.2 litre, V6, 184 kW (247 hp) gasoline engine, 6-speed DSGThe others are European. No tdi over here

[wikipedia.org]

1.6 litre, I4, 85 kW (114 hp) gasoline engine, 6-speed manual (Europe only)
2.0 litre, I4, 110 kW (148 hp) gasoline engine, 6-speed manual (Europe only)
2.0 litre, I4, 103 kW (138 hp) turbocharged diesel engine, 6-speed manual (Europe, Australia only)

yep the eos comes in either the 2.0t or the 3.2 liter (r32 motor)

I would have to say after all the vw's I have worked on in the current generations available motors the 3.2, 2.5 and the 2.0 TDI pumpe dusse motors are by far my favorite. The 2.0t is hit or miss along with the older version which it replaced the 1.8t. Most problems that I saw on the 1.8t's were sludge problems due to infrequent oil changes or not using the correct oil..which could have been prevented by using the proper recommended oil and doing regular maint. Other than the sludge prob and as long as it hasnt been abused, or touched the wrong way.. heh the 1.8t can be reliable.

The 3.2 and 2.5 and TDI havent seen too many problems with those engine wise. Now DSG problems thats another topic.

Im not a fan of dsg. Its like manual for slackers. It doesn't even compare to manual imo

Im not sure if shes in the price range of the eos 3.2 but the older VR6's she could be. If thats a solid engine and she doesn't want diesel then for sure Im maker her get it. Shes most likely getting a manual and if she wants fuel economy TDI. Are mk4's known for any electrical problems?(stuff I couldn't tinker with) How well do the trannys hold up under pressure?

Sporadic_Misfire
03-27-2008, 07:23 PM
The older VR6 12v and 24v are definitely solid motors. All vw's have electrical problems..most are once again in the could be prevented category due to someone not knowing what they are doing working on the car. Probing wire connector pins, splicing wires, using wire taps.. basically not using the right tools.

The manual trannys are pretty solid as well. I dont know what kinda pressure you wanna put or plan putting on it but for the most part they are solid.
