Repainting the 944, progression thread.

hey everyone!

The paint is terrible. It has chips, scratches, and fading areas all over the entire car, especially the front end. Not to mention, I removed the ugly black bumper pads from the front and rear bumpers, unfortunately revealing some nasty holes as you can see.



On some days, like if I wax it, it can look alright. The next picture for example makes the paint look pretty good, but alas, the holes are still there, along with the holes in the rear bumper as well, and.. the paint is never really 'good' no matter how much I try to make it look great.

SO.

I decided it was finally time to paint it. :woot:

Between work and school and the girlfriend, I managed to sand down the entire car in my driveway.

Most of the car had its original, 22 year old paint, but the front passenger fender, and rear drivers quarter panel had been repainted, due to an accident before I got the car.

You can tell from the pics above, because Porsche original paint was single stage, with no clear coat, and the respray was done with 2-stage paint, base coat and clear coat. Therefore when I sanded the panels down, the original panels stayed red while the repainted panels turned hazy white from the clearcoat.

Anyway.

I used to work at a paint & body shop called J-BAR. They do excellent work there. I spoke with my old manager there, and he agreed to let me paint my car at the shop in the paint booth! :D

So today (1/20/08) I finally got the car totally sanded and brought it over to J-BAR for some more prep-work.

Since I sanded down quite hard through the paint in some areas, where bondo was piled up, we decided to prime over those areas so that the new paint would stick to it:

So what did I do about the holes in the bumpers? Shave them of course!

Spent a good bit of time back at the house filling the holes and smoothing everything out.

The picture below is after primering the front and rear bumpers, and the front nose panel. The large holes you see in the bumpers are access ports for the bolts that hold them in place. You wont see them when they're on the car though.

Not giving away any secrets yet, on what paint color Im going to use, but it wont be the original Guards Red! ;)

Looks all too familiar. :lol: So how come you didnt take off the tail lights? We didnt take off the bumpers though when we did mine. Just all the lights, and the hatch and stuff.

The tail lights have some sealent around them to hold them to keep water from getting in. The car was rear-ended before I got it, so I didnt want to mess with taking those out, and decided to just leave them there and paint around em. The bumpers and stuff I took off so I can paint all sides of them, and bondo the holes closed.

Hopefully it will be done by then! I have Thursday to work on it, and then I have to work all day friday, so I'll have to put the bumpers and everthing back on either Thursday or Friday morning.

If I dont get it done in time, Im still coming, I'll just have to bring the daily bimmer. :shifty:

the bad part is.... The paint ordered but not delivered today by SW for whatever reason. So the painting will have to wait until tomorrow. :(

Rainforest green metallic would be amazing, but it's a bit beyond the capability of a novice painter. I know what color he's shooting though, because I helped pick it, haha.

British racing green/forest green might be cool..
but some kind of dark blue, not too dark, to the point of black ( think carbon blackish, but lighter than that without the sparkly shit in the paint) would be nice too.

either way, i'm excited and waiting for the results which i'm sure will impress us.

Elliott, I know my dad is going to be jealous of the shaved bumpers on the 944. After he got his painted, he put the whole car back together minus rubber bumpers and was pissed at how much better it looked without them.

Thank you guys! I wanted to keep it close to red so it would be easier to paint, and the new eclipse in that color really caught my eye, so i went to the dealer to check the paint out in person, and i really liked it. Thats basically how i picked it!

hey man! Ive been busy working on the car a lot lately, so I havent been to the meets in a while. I usually try to go to at least one or two per week, so you might eventually see me somewhere, depends on which meet though!
