View Full Version : DetroitTuned BBK installed... but yet to be tested :-(

My BBK arrived on Thursday and I got it installed today... Unfortunately, one of the rear caliper's bleed screw broke and I'll have to wait until Monday to get it fixed.
The kit looks great in my opinion. It is made by DetroitTuned, a MINI tuner. It comes from a Toyota Supra BBK kit (calipers & rotors) and was modified by DT. Calipers are Outlaw 4-piston. Rotors are from iRotors and are 12.8". The pads I got are Hawk.
I am looking forward to try them! I didn't have a chance to see it with my wheels on, but hopefully it will fit without spacers.

I was thinking of the same kit

I'll post a quick review as soon as I try it...
For the price ($900), this kit is a no-brainer when it comes to BBK!
How is the sound system doing Johnny??

those should fit fine under your wheels. Im running 13" rotors with much bigger calipers on 17" wheels.

I got my car back yesterday evening. My wheels wouldn't fit so the garage added 5mm spacers and it all good now.
There is a great improvement over the previous brake mods I had (EBC Red Stuff pads, EBC rotors, stainless steel brake lines, TyrolSport calipers stiffening kit). It brakes really well and I can feel the extra power. For $900, I couldn't be happier!

Is it just me or are those calipers WAY too small for those rotors???

It would be an issue if the rotors were not strong enough, but because these rotors are 1.2" thick, it's fine. Even after many hard braking, wrapping those rotors is almost impossible. If I got the 12" rotors kit instead, the calipers would cover the whole rotors.
Wilwood has the same thing

i upgraded my brakes last year, just powerslot front rotors and hawk pads. once i get some more power into the car, i plan on bigger brakes. thanks for your info and thoughts on the BBC kits. good to know

its a street car... you arent going to warp the rotors period.

:bs:
I have seen plenty of "street" cars come through my shop with warped rotors.
over time any rotor can become warped, sure not as fast as they would be, if they were tracked all the time.

not properly wearing in new brakes can warp rotors in a heartbeat. not to mention heavy braking at high speeds.
my 2 cents

I agree, why the heck are they so small? For almost 13" rotors they are TINY! The Wilwood calipers look twice the size even if they are on a smaller roter. I guess you get what you pay for, 900 bucks for a BBK is cheap!

It all depends on the piston size.... My calipers in the front and rear are the same size on my car, but the pad on the front fills almost the entire caliper, while the pad on the rear is about 2/3 the size.
Bigger rotors is for better cooling, the whole point of a BBK. Going to bigger calipers doesn't neccessarily mean better stopping power.

More consistant stopping power! (and for the bling bling :))

how is it more consistant?
and of course thats why you guys get BBKs... to look good... just for that, I'm painting my wheels black so no one can see that I have one.

BBK's dont fade like stock brakes so yes they provide more consistant stopping power. You dont have aftermarket brakes....

when did StopTech and Ksport start counting as OEM?, besides, i can count on one hand how many times my brakes have faded on the street...0 Even in the GTI which had shit for brakes, they never really got hot enough on the street to fade.

Having a bigger rotor stops brake fade, not calipers, which is the point I was making earlier.
and my brakes only clear my wheels by about 2mm, pretty sure those aren't stock brakes. That's why I like my car, you actually have to look to notice anything different.

Lets see a pic of your brakes, havent seen them. Bigger calipers stops fade as well as they hold more fluid which therefore takes longer to heat up and has more fluid transfer with pedal travel

If they came from the factory on the car thats considered OEM equipment no matter who makes the product. And if you never got fade with your GTi you didnt drive it very hard, stock brakes on VW's and Audi's SUCK!

There is more fluid in the caliper, but that doesn't really stop the fade as much as rotor size. Shit, pad thickness actually matters more. The thicker the pad, the farther away from the rotor the pistons are. That's why brake pads tend to fall off very fast when they get under half life. They burn up much more quickly due to warmer temperatures.
Jack may have a picture of my brakes, I don't have a camera so I don't have any.
