If their MK2's, Call my buddy Tom at Total Performance (Tampa) 813-875-1915.
The shift bushing kit is easy to install, and only runs around $7-$9.
Pick up a Bentley if your not sure on how to install them, they have a pretty detailed run down on it.

Its completely doable in about an hour if you have any mechanical ability @ all. Here is the link to the FAQ part from Vortex. It has pictures and complete instructions down to the parts and part #'s. Hope it helps!

Wait is the shifter sloppy or does he not have 5th gear. Cause loosing 5th gear is kinda common. If you run the tranny low on lube it will wear out the end of the pinion shaft and 5th gear pays the price! On a side note if he indeed has a bad 5th gear it can be replaced without removing the tranny! I can give you all the details if this is what your experiencing.

Ya you can try Total Performance for the parts. Tom should stock them. If not your gonna have to stealership it to get in done in time for the BBQ? Its really an easy job to perform. While your in there you should upgrade to a higher weighted rod for the shifter. Tom should have those in stock also and they arent expensive.

Or you can just DIY to see if he liokes it. I have done this on my Fox and with the short shifter I love it. The shifts are extremely precise and swift.

The top is the DIY...
the bottom is the purchased weighted rod...

its the shift rod bushing. not any of the actual bushings on the tranny or in the shifter. thats why i had trouble finding it. but i finally did and they should be here in a couple days. just sucks i missed the bbq. theres always the next one.

Yes shifter bushings, it's a kit so you can replace the everything in the linkage.
