so my question is where is the performance chip?? i wanna know where and if you can, please post some picture of what the performance chip looks like and where is it
bc i dont know where the heck it is and dont know what it looks like.

ohh ive heard about performance chip but didnt tell me what does it do to my car... whats the chip do to my car????

:thanks:

removes rev limiter and gives more power normally. sometimes they retune the car and sometimes they just raise the redline. idk specifics about bmw chips

its in the computer.........the computer is hidden in the firewall area infront of the behind the glove box but you go through the hood to get it....

I suggest you dont touch it, if you dont know what you are doing you could fry your computer and your car wont run.

Since the motor is obd II it wouldnt be cosidered a chip it would be software like a "shark injector" or something else. Theres a socket with a cap on it in the engine bay on the passenger side there should be some kind of sticker on that or something...
unless the car is still obd I, thats what you have to figure out first......

well its a 93 so its obd I.

and I have to agree with Jeff, just leave it in there and dont mess with it...

perforance chip = more performance ;) :D

actually you're talkin about the body... the body is an 1993... but the engine is an 1998 328i motor

anyway what is "obd I" meant???

OBD I and OBD II are different systems. i think OBD II is harder to get power out of, idk if its just the chip or what. like i said idk too much about bmws.

i think it involves at least the chip and throttle body.... cuz thats what i hear people talking about. chris, M52 Power, can tell you alot more.

ah sorry, yours is OBD II then if the motor is a from a 98.

I thought OBD I and OBD II were the diagnostic systems? Like when your car has a problem it sends a message to the computer saying what it is and all, and then you plug in the scanners and read what they are and clear them and all that jazz. OBD II is just a newer, more updated system than OBD I i believe.

thats probably right... i just know that one of them is easier to get power out of

the best way to find out if your car actually has the performance software is to rev your car up untill it hits the rev limiter, if its over 6500 then you do.

Why dont you call the old owner and ask him what kind of chip you have? He already sold the car to you, i dont think he needs to lie.

The car could be either or i would asume Obd1 or obdII depending if the ecu was changed as well. <<<thats another thing to ask.

Todd have you started driving the car yet? if so why dont you bring it down to my shop so i can take a look at it.

:nono: don't touch it, it's very addicting.

OBD = On Board Diagnostics. OBDII is a lot more advanced, and also implements a lot more emissions BS, the net result being that it's more work, and sometimes harder to get the same amount of power out of the engine as if it were OBDI.

If the car is OBD II you won't be able to find a "chip". The changes to the engine management software will have been flashed or downloaded into the ECU with a "shark injector" or something similar. OBD stands for Onboard Diagnostics. The most significant change in the system from OBD I and OBD II is that OBD II has two sets of O2 sensors, one before the cat and one after the cat. The purpose is to better monitor emissions which makes performance modifications more difficult. OBD I cars only have O2 sensors before the cat.

The ECU on E36 cars can be accessed through the cover on the passenger side of the firewall in the engine compartment. There is some insulation that needs to be removed. It is held in place with some plastic nuts. Behind it is a plastic cover that is held in place with four screws. If you remove the cover you will see the ECU inside. It is held in place with two retaining screws on the sides. You will have to loosen the screws and the ECU will slide out. The wire harness to the ECU is held in place with a silver clamp which you can release. Once you have it out you need to remove the ECU cover by bending the aluminum tabs back and pulling off the cover. You will see the chip inside and it should say on the chip who's it is in OBD I cars. Make sure you are grounded and there is not any static electricity present while handling the ECU. If you have never done it before I would suggest having someone do it for you.

If the management system is OBD II you will not be able to tell whose software it is since it is stored in memory and not a chip.

yea read what i said on the top again:lol:
i said i talked to the old owner yesterday and he said yes there is a chip in the car

yea i recently startin to drive on the road.. i never drive on highway before... im goin to maybe next week.. when i have a lot of experience, ill let you know and i would go over your shop

Jeff, i have to tell you this.... theres an minor oil leakin... everytime when the engine is runnin, theres an oil leakin and the oil leakin stop when the engine is shut off.. it bothers me a lot... i checked out the oil sending unit and theres nothin wrong... im thinkin its probably the drain plug is not tight enough or maybe it needs a new copper seal around the plug... the problem is i dont have a car jack to fix under... without car jack, i cant reach to go under the car either

on your oil leak problem ^

there's dozens of things it could be. There are different types of oil seals and gaskets all over the engine, the best thing to do is get a flashlight and try to find where the oil is coming from, like where it's spilling out of.

hope it helps you out!
