My mom likes the M6 convertible, but shes always wanted a Carrera, so she wants me to take her to test drive the 997TT... Comments, concerns, suggestions? Shes trading in her Escalade and Mr. Bo-jangles for her new car
Also would you suggest Bert Smith over Reeves? I know of this debate but never heard consensus of people trying Bert Smith or having experience there...

i like the 997... but its your moms car, whatever shes gonna be comfortable in...
one of my teachers had nothing but good comments to say about bert smith, said they treated her very well...
good luck!

the 997 would be sweet, but the m6 looks really good too... but i think if i had to choose between the two, i would go with the porsche.

I would go with the 997 purely because...
Convertible + Sports Car = WTF

I've been to Bert Smith a few times, and have been quite satisfied with their service; I'd reccomend them.
I worked at Bert Smith and would defenately buy a car there. The Porsche shop moved up in the national classification to one of the top ten in the nation from being second to last.
I would suggest for her to stick with the M6, the Porsche is unconfortable. We have a 996 4S and it's not a practical car....like the M6 is you're saying....but the M6 can be versatile and just as powerful with the comfort.
I bought my M3 brand new from Bert Smith.
Did so at the recommendation of a local E46 M3 owner Chuck who bought his car brand new from Bert Smith, along with another E46 M3 owner Carlos / "Doctor M" who bought his car brand new from them.
They came recommended for their service department, which reminds me I need to call them right now as I'm up for inspection I.
Hopefully I can get a 335i loaner. Last time it was an E60 525 and before that a brand new E90 325i.
The M6 is going to be a SUPERIOR daily driver -- you're comparing a true GT car to a sports car :)
I personally would go for the 997TT as I already own the M3, but i'll be skipping Porsche altgoether.
Look for my posts on ferrarichat.com in about 5 years. ;)

Well...I'm pretty sure the car is going to be automatic...so no matter what...
Automatic + Sports Car = WFT...
;)
My vote goes to the M6...I think your mom would like it more...it is her car afterall.

id go with the M6 Vert simply bc its more practical... the 997TT is a superb machine, but your mom probably wont be driving it like most of us here would be :D...
i used to get my car serviced at Bert Smith and loved the place and the people. talk to Sandra Meek in BMW sales, she is a great lady, beautiful, smart, tall and a great personality...
997TT in vert is gonna be like a years wait plus $150,000...
M6 vert is also gonna be a long time waiting, plus however much that'll run..
Why does she need such a performance vehicle? What's wrong with a carrera cab or a 645 vert? Does she really need 500hp??

Automatic + Sports Car = WFT...
True. I wouldn't cal either of these cars auto though.
The M6 is SMG III, which I am sure you know is one of if not these fastest shifting sequential box out there.
The 997TT Automatic is actually faster than the manual.
M5Beast
10-16-2006, 03:25 PM
Yeah its like .4 seconds faster in auto lol...
I'm not sure... My mom can drive a stick so I don't know which she'd want. I told her that the M6 is going to drive just like the M5, and that she should go test drive the 997 to see for herself. She's always liked the Maserati Quattraporte... which is a classy car but not for me... We'll see what she ends up likeing

personally i would get te 997tt but, for your mom id probably get a regular 6 series of her choice instead of the M. but if she likes the maserati, id rock that thing like crazy! the new one is supposed to be substantially better in every way than the old one.

911 Turbos will own bmw in just about everything. Screw BMW pride, that would be my choice.
Not pride here, just for a woman, she'll need the comfort and space which the 977 doesn't have.

dude if she is going to be riding rapper rims than she should get a non true performance driven automobile like the 997TT or the M6... she will lose handling, fun factor, ride quality and overall drivability with large rims that really dont need to be on an automobile of those sorts...
she should just get a 650i or a 997 Carrera 2 or 4

ya the M5/M6 V-10 did win one of the engine of the year awards for 2006... but the new Turbo may win something as well for its great engine...

I don't doubt it, but it was probably already sold to someone, and if not, the mark up on it was probably at least 20k.. Car's like that don't just sit around you know??
IMHO, no car is worth an extra 20K over the price tag, just be smart and order one, or get on the list.. It's a waste to pay over for such a new car. Just wait a few months..

Guys, nobody on EARTH needs a 500hp street car. Nobody.
Hell, the only people who might need 500hp are known as "professional race car drivers". Even a track junkie doesn't need a 500hp car to have fun.
99.9% of drivers cannot take advantage of the horsepower their cars have.
This figure jumps to 99.99999% when speaking of vehicles with 300, 400, and 500hp. Yes, this figure includes me too. I have yet to reach my car's limits and truly take advantage of my 333hp.
This is far beyond "need"

i've pushed my car beyond 100% of it's potential :D
the result is blown motors and trannys :( :(
anyway I for the poll I would go with the bimmer, I only see a 997tt as being a hardcore race car in sheeps clothing (leather, CDplayer, A/C, etc.) and even I personally would not buy one unless I used it to it's maximum abilities or track events or something. As a daily driver the larger, more versatile M6 is much more reasonable especially as a "mom" car when comparing these two.

For those enthusiasts with the experience please chime in with your own comments, but from what I've gathered the 997tt isn't all that much of a "hardcore racecar".
I have seen people get the porsche turbo's and just up the boost for more straight line punch without ever thinking about how it may negatively affect their performance on the track. No offense to the people who do this, but they're taking the "race car" out of the equation once they've got enough torque to put the thing sideways at 100 ;)
I've seen more Porsche owners dis the turbo models in favor of the NA RWD models, hence they made the GT3.
My own experience with them was this past weekend at Sebring in a 996tt pushed to the performance edge by a great driver.
It wasn't all THAT great. I much more enjoyed zipping around in a NA 993 carerra.
The 996tt seemed to have a kind of softness to it that I didn't like. Plenty of torque, competent handling, the butt dyno sure felt that it was pushing faster in the straights, but it just didn't have a very good feel to it in the corners, it didn't seem like a very involving car. Wish I had a better explanation for it but I've got pretty limited experience here :dunno:

i wouldnt say hardcore racecar, but its its got a great engine, good suspension and handling. its a great driving car either for the track or very spirited driving but its small and probably too uncomfortable for being a DD for most people. i personally kinda like a stiff suspension and harsh ride cause i know it handles great. about the sidewyas at 100 comment, i do agree for the most part but, if your driving an all out racecar, you want more power. too much power? well id have to say that just goes with driver skill or maybe being comfortable behind the wheel of a monster. basically, you just have to learn to be easy on the pedals and stuff to control the power so its not all or nothing and you just spin constantly. case in point for a car like this would be the dahlback golf. its a full track car, almost completely custom in every way, pushing 1200 horsepower. its so fast around the track its insane, but thats because they dont mash the pedal and just smoke the tires out of the corners. i feel like im rambling on right now so im shutting up

well, that kind of goes back to what I said earlier... i bet a guy driving a 1200hp car around a track at the limit is a paid professional :D
anyway, yeah rambling here now mabye some more Porsche owners can chime in ;)
I don't like how the Porsche handles. I almost flew off a mountain twistie because of the handleing. At first it is responsive with a bit of oversteer, once it passes a very slim window of perfect steeing, it jumps to understeering, making skid marks in the pants. I'm sticking by my choice of an M6 or 650i.

The clutch is heavy, the engine is loud, and has little to no space for luggage (shopping bags)...Of course these are the complaints of a women.

in the porsches defense, ive been behind the wheel of a 997 turbo for a few moments and the clutch seemed great to me. i cant recall how the 996 felt, its been a long time since i drove one. the engine noise was perfect for my tastes, but i can see where some people dont like a loud engine.
im gonna stick with my maserati vote since thats in the equation, but she should definately go and drive all the cars shes interested in.

99TT felt like a race on/off engagement, but was very, very light for such a HP car..
The 996's weren't that heavy to me, I got used to it pretty quick..I Personally like a heavy clutch, not extremely heavy, but not like to the point that it's like a gas pedal..I like having to use some force..
Engine noise same thing, it wasn't obtrusive, only if you kept it at high rpms, which Porsche's sound incredible at.

You do have a point there, I agree. We miss the point that the car is for a woman, so we can like the sound and feel all day long, but the car is for a mom. Our friend in Italy has a new Maserati Quatroporte (upgrade from an older POS Audi A8) and it is nice my dad says. M3?
The Quattroporte is no "luxo" with its cheap plasticy center counsul that looks like it came from an older Mercedes Benz, aluminum petals, and a gauge cluster/ steering wheel and stiched seats that resemble the inside of a ferrari.
They're both sport sedans with performance in mind while being designed...Nothing less and nothing more.

So I showed her the BMW X5 and the Range Rover...
She doesn't like the X5, but I showed her the Range Rover Sport Supercharged, and she wants to test drive that. Anyone have opinions? I'm not too knowledged on the Range Rover, I always thought they were way overpriced but the sport supercharged looks nice. 20x9.5s and brembo brakes. 390-400hp 4.0L V8. Sounds like it could be upgraded very nicely too :) It has the manumatic shifting which is ghey but better than just Auto, and it starts at 58,000. Will take extensive time looking, but have been busy lately trying to get the fikses worked out on the M5, and not this flat tire on Bojangles bah!

The supercharged one goes for about 70K.. I would know, I was just at a dealership two weeks ago.
But the s/c'd rover is sweet, it's got a little kick to it, but nothing crazy, it wasn't really meant for all out performance. It rides great, interior was awesome and the suspension on them are incredible.. Go check them out if your looking for an suv, they are pretty sweet.

also you have to look at how many cars they have out. Some companies have many more cars out and increase their chances of problems. Porsches have always been very well maintained cars. I can't see why mercedes isnt lower though, everyone says they have quite a few breakdowns and some of the worst customer service of all the companies

They certainly have less of an amount of vehicles out on the road as compared to others, lexus/ford/GM/infiniti/kia/mb etc..
But cayenne's, boxsters, and regular 996/997 carrera's are quite popular. everytime I'm on the road for more than a few minutes, I'll always see a few..
There's more out there than you think.

AzzMan

That's the thing about the Astons tho, they don't NEED to be fast! Same reason I sort of want to keep my 318- doesn't matter how fast a car is if it's a pimp-ass ride.

I know of this debate but never heard consensus of people trying Bert Smith or having experience there...
i just read this thread
i dont kno anything about porsche for now but i kno the 997TT is a gorgeous lookin car and i kno theyre fast as hell...
anyway man the last time i went to the Reeves(BMW Dealership), i was askin a lot of questions about the M6... he was tellin me about they only get 6 M6 per year
and also if you want to buy the M6, you're gonna be on the waitin list.. he said its take 4 years to wait to get it... if your mom dont want to wait, then i guess she gonna have to find another car unless if she dont mind buyin a used M6
Im not soo quite sure about this but thats what he told me... if u want to contact him, its 813-739-5027 and his name is Tim... ask him anything about M6 and see whats up... i dont know if hes still workin there cuz i havent talk to him since i think last May
Aston Martin is always been a gorgeous lookin car for a while but ive heard theres so many mechanical problems and theres always an oil leakin problems.... Plus i know the facts that almost all newer Aston Martin cars are pretty heavy than i thought
Maserati cars r fuckin nice as hell... i went to the Maserati Dealerships once and holy fuckin cow theres soo fuckin nice.. i dont know much about Maserati but i heard theyre good tho...
P.S. if im wrong about what i heard in rumors, let me know cuz i would love to know:headbang:
