Wow...that's a super old episode of MotorWeek. I didn't know the 944 had that much power and was that quick. And I guess they didn't have computers to measure G's around the skidpad.

FCs rule, I'm not suprised it was so close in performance to the 951. The 951 is a sexy beast tho.

good to see the 944 win..... altho i do have to say that for 17 grand, that starion is a hella good deal. I mean, the 13k you save could be put into the car to make it fast as balls

nowadays you can find a 951 for 5-7k in nice shape, and a Starion for like 4k

Man, WHERE! I'd jump on that in a second, I swear I would. I see em for between 9-14 usually.

are you serious? i find them all over for that price!

the shop i worked at a few months ago sold a really nice 944 Turbo with almost all the available options including the exclusive premium sound (rare) for $5000. It started at 7ksomething but nobody wanted it until the price dropped. I see them around all the time for this price range... If I ever have that much money I am definately getting one, but considering I'm in debt right now, I dont think I will anytime soon...

Nice video!

I just saw that recently and posted on another Porsche board. Good to see it here as well.

Also, prices for 951 are really starting to rise, thank god!! :)

You tell me when you see one for that price and I'll snatch it up ASAP, as long as it's in good condition.

I bet it is either the speed/reference sensors or the DME relay.

Both easy and cheap fixes.

haha just look around and you can find them, I know of at least one off the top of my head, its in ok condition but not the best, and I know a 944S2 in pretty good condition, but the guy isnt sure if he wants to sell it yet or not..

I'm really anal about stuff like that, I'd like to find one without any damage and somewhere under 75k miles. That's probably why I've been finding more expensive ones, because they're all kept up like they were taken out once a month.

Had a 924S once, and 944Turbos run great but that's on old video, old Jap cars....find something against a new WRX/STI or an EVO.....Then you can have something to smile about (maybe...maybenot)

first off, you cant compare new cars to those from an older era. The 944 turbo and those 3 jap turbo cars were the best of their time. A new STI or EVO of today still doesnt match the perforance of the new GT3 and 911 Turbo's of today either. ;)

Anyway, SWEEEEET car you have!!!! I'd love to see pics and hear details about it, make a thread in the Welcome section!!!! :thumbu: :thumbu: :D

You're right about old vs new, and you're right about the cars in the era of the 944 turbo. So was a Volvo 240 Turbo. The 944 is still pretty strong today, and can put out alot of horsepower. I've seen 'em give 911s a fit at Sebring. I decided to go with a combination of old and new. Old handling (about the best an average guy can afford) with new(er) power. Just got tired of all the oil leaks and a sheep in wolf's clothing. But when you compare the $price$ tag difference in an STI vs a 911 turbo, lets say 3 fold difference, I have a hard time justifying that, and I can afford it. I'm not knocking Porsche, otherwise I wouldn't drive one, plus I've owned 4 so far. I just like the fact that I can work on this car, even with a 2003 WRX engine in it. I know every inch of the car because I've had it completely apart. If you're interested, there's a pretty decent history of this conversion on community.webshots.com/user/fat73 and follow the 914 WRX album. Lots of pics in there.

See you guys around Tampa

I should hope to god a new 911 could outperform a new STI, and in a similar fashion I should hope a 944 could've outperformed an RX7 (which it barely did, really).

Different cars for different uses, I'd like to see a 944 that has the infinite grip of an STI or the launch/cornering capabilities.

I have yet to see someone custom make a 4wd 944, which would be totally amazing and suprising!!! There are some new 997's that are 4wd though, I dont know much about them but I'm sure they are close in comparison to the capabilities of an STI.

W9R1 - I think Renegade Hybrids did a similar conversion to your car, with a Subi engine in a 914. I watched a few video clips and looked at a few pictures and I think it's absolutely amazing. I LOVE seeing wicked body conversions or engine transplants like your car.

Even with the AWD and set up from ralley specs of a Sti/Evo, not much can out handle a properly set up Porsche 944/Turbo/S2, etc.

In the wet???? No contest an Sti/Evo/Audi will out handle most anything.

Actually, pro ralley drivers will switch from 4wd to 2wd on hard corners as this will allow them to power into the corner faster, swing the ass around and then power out back into 4wd. So in a sence, 4wd is slower in the corners, i nthe hands of a pro driver.
