I think Cars and Concepts use theirs as a business card holder.

No, they don't work. They do nothing. Seen a hundred tests in a hundred different magazines, and they offer no difference.
Watch any of the ricer TV shows or read any ricer message board, though, and you'll get people swearing up and down they got 10whp on the dyno with one!
Don't waste your money.

i highly doubt it will get you much power. If you have the $60 you could try it out though. Essentially it's just a leaf blower fan ramming in more air. I expect you could make your own pretty easily if you had some tubing. I wouldn't expect that much power, but I'd be interested to see what kind of gains you actually get

HAHA yea C&C uses it as a business card holder in the front office!! hahahaa

That thing looks just like the "Tornado"... If anything they actually restrict you from power, because they restrict the airflow, and twirling the air into the engine doesnt do anything, its still the same amount of air, if not less...

Exactly.
Physics 101.
Spinning air around at ambient velocity does not increase the total cubic feet of available air.
Now - Spinning air around at ultra-high velocities (10,000rpm+) causes compression which increases the total volume of air - The basic concept behind turbos/superchargers.

what can you buy that has a fan that spins at 10k+ rpm??

i wish mine was that big.... mine is smaller than a hairdryer
how fast do you think a hairdryer spins?? Because superchargers run off belts which means friction on the engine. If you could get an electric one then it wouldnt create friction and it would be superawesome :)

Then the problem becomes an electric one running off a 12 volt power supply, which translates into not much electric energy pumping through, and not very fast spins.
In all honesty, the parasitic drag from superchargers these days is so low, it really doesn't matter anymore.
And a hairdryer? I dunno about spins, but they probably only flow about 50 cubic feet per minute at 'Max' - if that much. Whereas an engine tends to generate about 150-200 cfm of air for every ~100hp. So my engine (making 240hp) pumps out about 400cfm, add on the turbocharger at 8psi (making 400hp) and you're running something like 200cfm from the turbo and a total of about 600cfm in the engine.

so is there anything you think can run off power that can generate that much air?? I mean, on pimp my ride they used to put in like 3 or 4 extra batteries for some of the cars that were using tons of power. Could you not have whatever fan run off batteries??

I'll put it simply - If it could be done, it would have already been done.
Stick to the basics, turbo or belt driven supercharger.
Sure - You could do it. Slap on 5 or 6 alternators (which then create more parasitic drag thanks to being belt driven) and you could probably get an electric supercharger to work decently.

lol true.....
basically i want some kind of custom supercharger thats cheap as the materials it costs to make it.
jake, think you could do it?? :)

You gotta pay to play? :)
Sure I can build you anything you want, but it won't be cheap haha.

hahahahahaha.
im talking about 4 years in the future, or when my warranty runs out. OR is canceled because i run autoX and track events. Apparently subaru checks SCCA websites and stuff and if they see you signed up they may void your warranty.

alternate fuel injections are always a good thought.
as far as forced induction goes:
i saw a video of a dyno run where they actually just hold a gas powered leaf blower up to the intake and get an astonishing amount of power out of it.... true story...
kelso
09-26-2006, 10:24 PM
i saw that. they also sprayed nitrous in as well on a few runs. but that might actually be considered like shoving more air in...cause the car was running with no blower then they turn it on to add air....i dunno i never took physics class

Seems like all the AWD Turbo car manufacturers are doing that these days.
Mitsu drops the Evo warranties w/o any warning. If you so much as POST on a Mitsu Evo forum, you lose your warranty.

anyone hear of any similar practices by BMW? Particularly with M cars? I haven't yet.

that is so stupidddddddd
but bmw's are always shown on tv and stuff gettin crazy. i remember the m5 was being constantly drifted by various shows. always a huge plume of smoke. that really makes no sense though i mean these are performance cars, you pay for the warranty...wtf? how about audi and vw? they do anything dumb like that?
