I'm thinking of some slicks for my next set of track tires. Does anyone have a good source for some used slicks?

+1 try bimmerworld, the sell their old race tires (R888's and some other Toyo tire). I think they're 235/40/17's.

Derp, I take it back. They've switched to conti's:

Bimmerworld looks like a great deal, unfortunately, I've got 15x8 wheels.

I know of a few places, but nothing close to 15".

Just to clarify for yourself or anyone else reading this, slicks are slicks... not street legal, while R-compound tires are, well, R-compound which are traditionally DOT approved for street use... barely. Just making sure you don't start making phone calls and ask for the wrong type of tire lol.

:) Oops. Thanks for the clarification. What I'm hoping to find is some non-street-legal racing slicks.

Well, in that case, try John Berget Racing Tires. They've got it all, and used.

I have no idea how much track experience you have, but make sure that is the path you want to go down. I'm not going to give a lecture on right and wrong ways of upgrading your car for track use, but running street tires is probably the best and quickest way to develop your driving skills, and running slicks is going to impede you. Just something to think about.

I've been doing track days and autocrosses pretty consistently for the last year. My Hancook RS-3s will need to be replaced sometime in the near future and I'm just looking into options for their replacement. Some used slicks are an intriguing option, but I understand your point, as I'm certainly still learning.

If you've only been doing it for a year I would highly suggest moving to an r compound tire first before slicks. Also, used slicks are hardly better than r comps. Take for an example the toyo ra-1: they may lose half a second a lap over the entire life of the tire. they are damn consistent. Those continental slicks (re-branded hoosiers) lose 2 seconds a lap after 40 minutes of use. Slicks are pretty much worthless to buy used, might as well run an r comp.

as for places to look, try bob woodman tires or performance tread. there are quite a few classes in HSR that run 15" slicks and I know woodman has a lot of them. Not sure if he actually keeps them in stock to re-sell though. You may have to wait for an HSR or SVRA race to come to sebring then drive down there and see what you can find.

My uncle autocrosses an open-wheeled "Stalker" Lotus replica. He rips up the autocross on slicks and I was just feeling a little jealous. It seems some R comps are the better bet for me.

Your uncle wouldn't happen to be Scott Wheeler would it?

Thats him. His little car sticks nicely! I want mine to do the same!

Yeah, he's at EVERY autocross I have been to... except maybe one. Hell, I just saw him last weekend at Brooksville and his car was sticking nicely, but it was also 98* so he was able to get the heat in them. He kicked my butt that day. But I've beaten him on my R-compounds before during the cooler months, him and Mary lol. I've also been running the same R-compounds for almost the last two years, while he's gone through a couple used sets of slicks... and on a super light kit car too. You can imagine how quickly you would go through them.

Damn, he still runs that? I still remember him and that car running every event like 6 years ago when I used to autocross all the time

He ran an open wheeled vw for a long time, the stalker might be about 6 years old though.
