OK the Chump car was pushed back to July. So that gives every one 4 months to get a car ready. Then there is one is Sept.. at Sebring.. both are Chump car 12 hour Enduro races.
Also a Lemons event on New years eve.. a 24 hour event so you can race into the New Years.
So go out on craigslist find a car. ART Advanced racing technology over in St pete will pre bend you a weld in cage for under $300. You can get a car set up for 2 grand. Thats only $500 each for a team of 4.. and a few weekends.
I know some one is looking to build a mercedes. Any other takers out there.

Why dont we have an FG race

because most of you cant drive. Barry already has his own team so that knocks out about 25% of the FG population I would consider.
yep, i said it. bring on the flames.

I do agree knowing how to drive on a track would be a benefit, its not necessary. IMHO having at least 1/2 a team that can work on cars, weld etc is important. There have been a few races that I have seen teams with great drivers sidelined because they paid to have the car built then couldnt fix it.
The main thing to remember is that you have to finish the race to win. So in a 12 hour race you cant go out and flogg the car from the start. With most cars, cooling- temp is an issue. So you run the car where its comfortable, not the drivers limits. I feel the race is won or lost in the Pits, if you can stay out longer than the other teams and do less driver changes that will be a key factor.
Building the car is the biggest obstacle. The whole team needs to give up 6 or so weekends to get the car ready. Things like clutches, water pumps need to be done to make sure the car will actually finish.
I do agree with LD about picking a team. All those on my teams have done at least 3 DE track events. Plus they all had 2 or more years of Auto X experience. I feel the Auto X skills do come in when there are 100 plus cars out on the track and you really need to know where all 4 corners of your car are in relations ship to the other cars. You do allot of passing with only 1 or 2 inches to spare.
My point was to try to get some other teams interested. They had to post pone the May race at Homestead because only 5 cars signed up. They will hold a Full Race with only 15 ish cars.. So id like to see a few other teams in the area support this type of event. This is the CHump Series. Lemons has had no issues getting attendance, but they have a 2 year head start in running these events.
I have been posting on South FL racing. South Fl Miata club and Central FL site. I wanted to raise awareness in hopes that the Chump car races here in FL will be successful.
Thanks

I'm in a group that is building a Lemons / Chump Car Porsche 928. We have been really slow because the main guy has been going through an unexpected divorce.

There is CA team that has run a 928 Estate, they made it into a wagon, since the chopped the top to put in the cage. If you do a you tube search there is a bit of footage from their car. They are running with a Auto trans. Also spun a bearing the 1st race. Its a fast car.
Good luck with the build, Id like to be able to run against a 928..
Also for teams that are looking to do a build. ITs not that bad. I am actually building a 2nd car now..

Chump car just finished. A VW Jetta won.. this was a 24 hour endurance race at VIR..
The winning car ran 1,420 miles non stop. Besides Pit stops for fuel and driver changes.

I feel like I'd be decent with more track time, although I will not claim to be fast as of yet. Going to school without a car sucks :(

Yeah, that is Brian. He got the idea from us when he grenaded the engine in his "real: race car twice in a season. He had the funds and the people to put his on the track first. He had Mark Anderson and Mark Kibort as co-drivers for the two races that they've competed in so far. Thos guys are 928 racers that do very well. Especially Mark Anderson. They did well this last time at Sears Pointless but the BS points killed them. They had an overheating problem early on but were able to resolve it while the track was sut down due to that car that went upside down.
We should resume our Lemons project in a couple of weeks.
Heres Mark Anderson whipping up on some folks at Willow Springs a few years ago. This car weighs about 2,650 lbs and has about 500 rwhp.

This seems like something I could get addicted to for the rest of my life...
I already have too many addictions :shifty: but that doesn't mean I don't want one. :D
Something like this just seems like it requires a lot of free time... that, and team members that aren't a bunch of flakes, who wont bitch out on you.

There was a good article in Car and Driver about the LeMons and how it started on a bet.
Back to the video posted. I always found it very cool how Porsche made the V8 and the 2.5L in the 928's and 944's sound similar to a traditional Porsche 911 sound.

I meant how expensive my share would be to drive the car... lol. I charge for coaching, but for a seat in a race I'm not that pro to start charging. Besides lemons isn't a pro racer type of thing. It's mainly fun at the amateur level.

That's an awesome deal on the cage, how much would it be to just clean up the welds on an existing cage and add c-bars? Might have to truck the neon over to Tampa to get prepped :D

Well we are back from Homestead. It was a great time, A bit wet and a learning experience. Tires seem to be the tricky part to pick in a 12 hour race.
We ended up taking 2nd place. Beating out 3 other tampa teams. The 1st place team was from NC.. and had a bad ass Benz 190 with a 2.6l

That would be my thing. I'd get all into it and be on the half of the team would do all the work and the other half of the team would bitch about not getting to drive enough.... if they showed up at all. Nobody can commit anymore it seems.

Well I made a deal with the original build team that they would have 1st dibs on driving in the future.
I will admit I am very lucky on the team, they are all easy going and dont bitch. I would say building the car the labor was pretty even. But after the 1st race when we wasted the engine I and one other have done most of the work. But I am ok with this because its my car. Vs a team car. I just prefer it this way and it seems to work in my case. Our last race we had to do maybe 5 hours of work on the car to get it ready. And the event was about $600 each. Thats Gas, towing gas, hotel , tires brakes etc. So it was almost $300 a hour to race. 2 of us got more seat time than the others, but the deal is the next race the other guys will get the extra seat time. Since we have been doing 12 hour races and each drivers stint is 2 hours. Since the Pit stops cost time we ran 6 times out vs 8 to make the driving time even. But due to cost I have had to add 2 extra drivers to make up for the extra races that the original drivers either dont want to or cant afford to do. We run 4 races a year and not every one has the cash to do that. If your thinking about doing it i know Taj racing over on Tampa racing actually sells turn key seat time in a car. But he does all the labor so its more than $600 to race.

I believe taj is $800 per race plus whatever fees you need to pay as far as licensing and individual entry.

Yeah I've definitely noticed the commitment problems when it comes down to actually putting money in to race.

if i had space for more toys i'd have a team of crack pot drivers that are willing to pay to play in one way or another
if not i'd have a sweet car with a lot of sweat equity in it

You dont need allot of room. You find some one that can drive and that has a shop. So you have a place to work on and store the car.
Or with 4 team members you move the car around every few months so it doesn't take up one persons garage space all the time.

What if all your team members are college students living in apartments?
We hide our car in the back of another apartment complex and pray every day it doesn't get towed.

Its not a $500 car. it can be a $999 car. as long as you sell 499 parts off the car.
Usually interiors , glass and AC parts can be sold off to recoup some of the cash.
Craigslist has allot of 999 cars. What I have seen the Merc 190s are out there around that price but are all Autos. then trying to figure out how to do a manual conversion on the cheap.
