According to rallybuzz.com (http://www.rallybuzz.com/mini-wrc-on-target/) BMW representatives met with Prodrive boss David Richards at the Rally Sweden last weekend to talk WRC. On the agenda was an update on the MINI Countryman WRC project that has been ongoing for some months as we’ve previously reported (http://www.motoringfile.com/2009/08/19/rumor-mini-to-join-wrc-with-countryman/). The rally car is expected to undergo initial testing this summer with it’s brand new 1.6L turbo engine. It’s unclear how much (if any) similarities there are with the production engine other than the displacement.
In all Prodrive met with BMW and WRC as the weekend served as both a touch-base and a fact finding mission. Reportedly the rally car is expected to make a surprise debut at the Geneva motor show along side the production http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3401/3441323175_fa2c991f23_b.jpg
At this point there are no official announcements but the car has already been linked to Norwegian rally protege Mads Ostberg.
The development of the car was made possible by BMW’s exit from F1 and increased focus on production based series such as WRC, ALMS and the WTCC. It was also made possible by the WRC’s new engine rules which focus on production based 1.6L turbos. All this gives the upcoming Countryman rally car a tangible link to the production variant (especially the rumored (http://www.motoringfile.com/2009/08/14/mini-to-launch-special-countryman-performance-model/) fire-breathing JCW version).
In all the 2012 WRC season is shaping up to be a glorious return for MINI into a sport that has a great deal of historical significance for the brand.
Look for more news in the coming weeks as the Geneva Motor Show is scheduled for early March.

Why would they base this on the Countryman instead of the Cooper?

My guess is that the ground clearance of the MINI Cooper is just too low for rally.

I dropped by the local MINI dealer today to check out the new Countryman, but it was moved inside. I'm going back tomorrow to get an up close look and some pics.

So I got a chance to swing by the local MINI dealer in Stuttgart:

It's just a fiberglass/plastic molded shell, but it does appear to have pre-production headlights and taillights.

I'm liking it more and more every time I check it out!

I don't know guys, I used to own an R50 and I thought it was one of the best looking, most well proportioned cars I had owned. I haven't seen one car come from MINI since all of the new platforms started rolling out that looks half as good as the R50 and R53 did.

I'll confess to being a BMW fanboy, so I hope they do really well with this car and sell a ton of them. But my GOD is that thing ugly as sin.
