I picked up a cheap set of rims today for 300 bucks with almost brand new Toyo Proxes4 tires.

I know the tires look like balloons because theyre huge, and the rims are really kinda plain but i'll deal with it..

my concern here is whether i should keep the new rims silver or paint them black since they arent particularly special looking.

pshop image of painted black... like or no like?

the black kinda goes with the whole theme of the car. The unfinished lip definately looks better than all black imho, and i think that a polished black may look better than a flat black.

Yes the red/black theme is exactly what ive been telling my dad and friends to explain why I like them better in black. And i'd definately paint the rims gloss black rather than flat :thumbu:

does anyone think gunmetal would be better than black? I think gunmetal is starting to get kinda over rated. :chicken:

idk, i dont really think gunmetal fits on your car. I like the gold my dad has on his wheels but I also dont think theyd fit

yeah gunmetal and red dont really match as well, along with gold and red. The gold sure looks great on the blue though!

LDadrenaline

yeah, i think blue and black are the only colors that really fit gold well (imo). I think the black with unfinished lip will look great though

try looking for fuchs rims or knockoff fuchs... they look awesome on porsches. Also the 968 wheels look really good on 944s

gunmetal wouldnt work much on your car. the black windows will match black wheels very good. its how my 240 looked too

the fuchs rims do look really great, but they are also really expensive. Same with just about any other porsche type of rim, even the ugly dish wheels and phone dials that I have. I bidded on a few auctions on ebay on different types but they all went out of my price range, so I just ended up getting these. I just need an extra set so I wont have to keep tearing up my street tires by drifting. I think I will keep these new wheels as my DD set for a lil while, my red Ronal rims will be my drifting wheels because the tires are already shredding, and my phone dials as my track rims because theyre smallest and have the most awesome street-legal tires ever made, the Toyo Proxes RA-1's!!!

1 Vote for Polished Lip w/ Gloss Black Spokes.

That's the best color on a P-Car. Didn't the Fuchs come in that particular color scheme back in the day?

I remember it coming like that on 911's, not sure about 944's..

I'm sure 944attack knows this.

Deff get the inside painted black and leave the machined lip. It's exactly what I'm doing with my stock wheels.

Yep, the fuchs came on 911's, some 924S's, and some 944's, all through out the 70's and mid 80's. The color was actually more of a semi-gloss black, but many of them came in mulitple other colors on the 911's. I think the 944's only came with black fuchs and a couple special edition white ones. I dont think the fuchs ever came on 928's. I feel like i am forgetting a piece of info in all this..

have you looked into 968 wheels?? The guy who works on my dads transmissions has like five 944s, and all or almost all have the 968 wheels and they look good.

Yep, i've looked into ALL types of Porsche wheels, mostly on ebay. Just too expensive.

btw, wheels are in the process of being painted!!!!!

CLEAR COAT F*ED UP MY RIMS!!! or well so far just one, I want at least 1 layer of clear coat on the rims but when i sprayed it, it came out milky white! WTF. I can probably fix the section of the rim i sprayed, but I'm not sure if I'm using this clear wrong or if it's defective?... It's just DupliColor clear spray paint!

kelso
08-31-2006, 10:28 PM
the clear was white? or it made the black wheels turn white? either way i dont get how it did that, clear coat is unpigmented paint:dunno:

It actually sprayed out milky white! I have no clue why, i've never experienced this before. I tried spraying it on a few different materials, wood, rubber, driveway... it all did the same thing. I'm pissed though, now one of my rims looks like it has a bumpy blotchy spot, because i just painted the black back over.

DAMMIT.

for some reason, spraypainting rims doesnt seem like a good idea in the first place

kelso
08-31-2006, 10:38 PM
get the paint off as quick as you can since its still wet. it will make it look better in the long run. and check the can... it should not be white...thats really weird, you must have grabbed the wrong thing or they ****ed it up.

side note- were you at a carshow at chick fil a tonight? voodoo said i was standing by your car, but i really didnt think it was your car...

if the taillights looked completely black then it was probably him. I highly doubt it was though, because he lives a long way away in longwood

944attack
08-31-2006, 10:45 PM
haha LD is right, and if I ever find another red 944 with black tail lights im punching them out!!!

lol but nope, not me.

as far as the can goes, the top is clear, the label on the back says clear, it's definately not white paint, just that it sprays out milky white, its nasty.

and whats wrong with spray painting the rims? I have a paint gun, but it would cost MUCH more money for the paint for that thing, and if I took the rims to some shop to have my ass raped from money to have them paint it, they would probably use spray paint too. I think most people would be suprised how much some paint shops use spray paint on smaller stuff. I spray painted my phone dials black and they turned out awesome, and so far these are turning out great too minus the clear!

LDadrenaline
08-31-2006, 10:47 PM
im sure if they spray paint it though, they do it the right way. i.e. getting the surface prepped, polishing it, putting 2-3 coats on, and glazing it over/clearcoating/etc

kelso
08-31-2006, 10:52 PM
well this one was like turbo or something too, but ran kinda ****ty...had black wheels though....

actually since you have a paint gun, you can get a small can of paint at home depot for about as much as a spray can...thats how i did my wheels on my 240

944attack

just went outside to take some pics.

here is a spare tire I painted, REAL clear on the left, milky white crappy clear in the center, and actual white paint on the right...
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e355/bmx944/100_0910.jpg

and here is a pic of rim #2 that I painted with no clear, spray paint looks good to me! Still would be better with clear though..
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e355/bmx944/100_0906.jpg

and I took another picture of the bad spot on rim #1 that i F-ed up on, but you cant really see it in the picture, it's not that bad anyway.

cool, i did not know that! :thumbu: I've only had to use it once so far and the can was pretty expensive, got the paint at some paint store though.

The clearcoat in spray cans sucks balls. I've tried numerous types and they all either A) Lift the paint, B) Cause that milky white effect, or C) Leave "sparklies" everywhere.

That being said, Tower Paints online sells a premium grade automotive clear in a spray can that is GREAT. Only rattle-can clear I've ever used that worked well.

+1 for a proper spray gun and slightly higher quality paint.

944attack
08-31-2006, 11:47 PM
hmmm, i think i might just buy some clear for the gun..., im actually really happy with how the black spray paint came out though.

I say leave them how they are. Unless the rim is of decent size, I think the black rim looks ghetto.

LDadrenaline
09-02-2006, 01:33 PM
the thing is, that the black goes with the theme of his car. I agree that the whole rim painted flat black looks ghetto, but if you do the unfinished/machined lip and do the rest like a gloss black itll look good
