A/C working but not blowing.

damn this blows.

my a/c went out last night. when iturn the fan from 1 to 2 to 3 or anything all i hear is a turbine- like high pitched whrrr from the vents, what could have caused this? i hope its something stupid like a belt or something

the a/c sounds exactly the same, the air is cold coming out (when i'm moving) but the fan isn't blowing - does anyone have an idea as to what could be wrong? maybe if someone has a diagram about how the a/c system works, i dont know, but i'm on my way out to do chores i'm gonna research later tonight, but hopefully one of you guys have the information off the top of your head

to clarify, the a/c blows out the defroster and toward the feet and everything is happy, but it doesn't blow air out the vents, i think maybe a tube was disconnected or somethign i'll have to investigate

first off, what year is your 325?

so it blows cold toward the feet but no air at all toward the vents? doublecheck the blower-motor fuse or any other A/C fuses, and possibly any tubes like you said.

yeah, the a/c works exactly as it did before except for when i change the dial to the face setting, it doesn't come out the face vents, there is just a turbine type whirr, which sounds like air flow, but the air dones't flow to my ear at the end of the vent. however, swtiching it to the feet or the defroster, the air blows out fine and dandy.

i have a 1994.

edit:i looked at the fuses and they are all a-ok

it doesnt blow out any of the face vents? passenger side or driver?

is there any way you could detect where the whirring sound is coming from? like behind the dash in the center?

i could be entirely wrong about this because i know this is the way newer porsches, audi's, and vw's work, not so sure if BMW's are the same exact thing but... i believe the way the A/C system distributes the air to different locations (face, feet, etc.) is by doors which open and close inside of a box behind the dash, which lead air to each location. I think the doors open and close by servos or something similar, and operate when you push the buttons. So, if one of the servos or arms which opens the door breaks or stops working, then the door is stuck open or closed. So perhaps if air is being pushed against a closed door than it might make a strange whirring sound, and not come out the vents. Now IF THIS IS infact the problem, then you would have to take apart your whole dash and either fix the problem or replace the box. :eek: :eek:

It could always be a much minor problem, which it probably is, but im just givin you a heads up in case its something like this.

i was thinking the same thing as well, and i researched for like 3hours and apparently alot of other people had similar problems to mine, some of them were solved by replacing the microfilter in the car so i'm going to do that today, and others had to replace the box that you were talking about

but get this, so my A/C compressor is really loud, and then after this whole ordeal, i tried doing a few different solutions with the a/c and finally got the flap to open, so the a/c works now through the vents, but get this, my car's a/c got really quiet, like i can't even tell its on but its blowing cold air and everything and before you could tell when it was cycling on and off.

but now its loud as balls, but it was nice to have it quiet while it lasted!

im replacing the micro filter today, i'll let you know if i think that was the source of problems.

i replaced my airfilter for the engine just amoment ago, the last one was all brown and had sand and **** falling out of it. you could say that i forgot this one minor detail. I always wondered why my mpg was lower than everyones around with the same engine. but on the way home, i noticed my mpg went from 25mpg@50-55 to like 29.x mpg and from 20-21mpg @70 to 25mpg
