Ok I am having a hell of a time trying to decide on which. I realize they are pretty different cars but I need some help anyways. It will be my daily car, a/c etc. but I will also want to autox the car too. I have been researching these cars to death. I absolutely love the balance of the 968 and I can't imagine a 944 being to far different. I have only driven a couple E30s but not pushed them too hard. I will need a pretty reliable car bc I have to drive home/ to school fairly often ~ 300 miles round trip, a couple times a month. I have around 2500 to buy a car. I can do pretty much all of the work on a car by myself and probably one of the most anal about maint. Any suggestions?

TIA
Jeff

Hey Jeff,
My suggestion would probably be to get the e30. They are in most cases much more reliable, easier to find parts for, cheaper parts, easier to work on, and also capable of autocrossing when needed. It just seems like the safer way to go. You will probably still have a good time modifying the car and not have to worry about so much headaches fixing it.
If you do however get a 944, you know I will help provide as much assistance as possible in finding parts, service, guidance, basically anything you need. I've owned a total of 4 of them for the past 5 years now, and I've learned the ins and outs and everything between. I've also owned an e30, an e24, and an e28 for shorter periods, so I can assure you that finding parts is easier and cheaper for those cars, especially the e30!

After owning and DDing an '86 944 for 5 or so years, I agree with Elliott, get an e30. I think its more what you are looking for.

I think elliot one said "theres nothing more expensive than a cheap porsche" ive tried to tell fox basically the same thing with his benz. an e30 is cheap to buy, cheap to fix and cheap to maintain. it's the ideal daily. and with a few suspension mods it will track and autox pretty well

I agree with everone here about the E30. I have owned, auto-crossed and raced several 944s and E30s and have settled on E30s. The 944 is more of a sports car, they handle better, and stop better but the E30s are much more economical to maintain and to modify.

Hold out for a 325is, 1989 or newer. The "is" has a 3.73 lsd that makes a huge difference for auto crossing and track use. Other things like front airdam, rear spoiler, BBS wheels and sport seats make the "is" mreo desirbale as well. Don't discount a 318is too if you can find one.

Depending upon your skills, if you can swap a motor or a trans, there are some $500 cars out there and $500 motors are plentifull.

Good luck and feel free to ask any advice anytime.

the e30 is a great car, and they are very reliable. mine broke down on me once, and it was a cheap at home fix (coolant line had a leak). and they e30 has a very "fun nature" to it, i dontt really know how to describe it to you without you owning one. its worth it to me to get the e30 for a daily drive, and maybe wait and get a 944 for the fun car later on.

check out e30tech.com if you havent already, it might make you want one more. good luck though
